CHAPTER 12

AT THE JUNCTION

It was well after dark, much later than Q had planned to start back to Los Angeles but it was a good visit. He was glad he took the time to see Ed and Wanda. Nate's company was always more than welcome and Jada's presence was a bell ringer in spite of his inability to consistently control his hormones around her. Jada opted to ride in the rear on the way back, saying she would more than likely snooze most of the way home. If Jada did fall asleep, Nate's conversation would not clear the censors; and on the positive side, driver fatigue would be remote.

Except for the traffic lights, Q kept missing the green. Traffic on Florida Avenue was light and flowing. Q laid out the return route in his mind. Reversing the drive down, he would take Highway 74 to Interstate 215 North past March Air Force Base, then Highway 60, the Pomona Freeway, into Los Angeles. They should be dropping Jada off first, between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.

Nate made sure the radio was still on 88.1 F.M., the KLON jazz station. He adjusted the volume and his head rest, then leaned back. Q's eyes met Jada's in the rear view mirror as she removed her glasses and bandanna. Didn't her eyes say put the Lumina on automatic and come to me? She smiled, disappeared, stretched out across the rear seat and covered her legs with her sweater. That melodious voice titillated, “Good night, guys.” Throughout their visit at Ed's, they never touched. They didn't sit close; not at dinner, not at any time. Yet Q sensed they were together and close the whole time. What mischievous deception was rerouting his electrical system? He could hear her flavor, smell her sunset, see her voice and feel her beauty. The torrents of impulses creating unreal graphic sensations were from her. Oh yes.

“Do you remember when Chuck Niles used to be a D.J. with KNOB?” Q asked, to interrupt the untimely hallucinations. “He's been around as long as jazz, at least in Southern California. How long has this K-L-O-N been around? I like them. They play a lot of the old classic stuff.”

“I don't know, man. How about ever since you've been gone?”

They crossed Sanderson Avenue pretty much out of the city now. Q increased the speed. Jada was still awake. The three of them shared fresh recall of Ed and Wanda. “Their home, that site, that view was marvelous!” Jada managed to stagger her words between yawns and pardon-me's. “And that delicious food—hmmmph! My goodness—and that seasoning! An overindulgence that I don't mind paying the price. Ed can burn. You hear what I'm saying?” she added, imitating Wanda.

“I didn't know Wanda was so opinionated. Man, she's something else. Did you know, Nate?” Q asked while fidgeting with the seat controls for more comfort.

“Yeah. I understand she was the mouth in the wives’ club.”

“Was the wives club separate too; one black and one white?” Jada was trying to remain attentive.
